Greeting Cards

Should we give them or should we just offer our own original gratitude, thanks, and wishes?

I think that it gives people a special feeling. Something slightly bigger, than just receive a 'thanks', it's a unique thanks. Of course, giving cards on special ocasions should not prevent one from expressing good wishes or/and gratitude on a regular basis :)

the card doesn't matter in itself. it is what's written inside that gives it purpose. a card that says "happy holidays" will provide about 2 seconds of joy for those on the recieving end. it will be discarded and forgotten. but a card with a note inside, contains something meaningful to both parties. And through this, it lasts a lot longer.

Cards are a special way of showing someone that you are thinking of them. It shows you took the time to go to the store, pick out a perfect card for them, write a note inside, find their address and the stamps, and mail it out. Cards should not replace our personal gratitude or wishes, it compliments them using words we could not find. It is another way to make people feel special.

Besides making profit for greeting card companies, the main purpose served by any pre-written letter of this sort is to give us something to say when we don't take the time to find our own words. We want to let others know that we appreciate them, but don't know how to express this appreciation... so we turn to greeting cards.

The long standing tradition of sending greeting cards is depriving the senders of being forced to find a way to express themselves, and the recepients of recieving the sender's own true words. Just the fact that cards are meant for a broad audience across the country shows that they are severely limiting human self-expression (how could everyone who sends the same card feel the same way about its recipient)?

I believe that writing a personalized note, with much contemplation of words from the heart, maybe accompanied by a sketch or photo, is the most meaningful way for greetings to be exchanged. If ever we are empty of words, we can search deeply in our own minds, not the card store.
